Skolen havde flere forgængerskoler, så historien om skolen går tilbage til en latinskole i det 17. århundrede. I 1914 fandt den første studentereksamen sted. I dette år stod den første bygning på Waldstraße, den nuværende "Gamle bygning", færdig og blev taget i brug. Bygningen blev oprindeligt planlagt og opført som lærerkollegium, men blev aldrig brugt som sådan. I dag består skolen af den repræsentative "Gamle bygning", samt den såkaldte "Nye bygning" og to tilbageværende pavilloner fra 1970'erne, samt den multifunktionelle bygning med kantine, opholds- og kursuslokaler, som blev opført i 2010. Mellem sommeren 2010 og sommeren 2011 blev facaden på den gamle bygning komplet energirenoveret.
