Stedet, der i dag har over 6.700 indbyggere, blev første gang nævnt skriftligt i 1116 som Brath. Det tilhørte hertugdømmet Gulik og fra 1614 Gulik og Berg. I 1815 kom det til Preussen. Bracht er fødestedet for maleren og grafikeren Hendrick Goltzius.
Vest for Bracht ligger det vidtstrakte Brachter Wald, der strækker sig til den tysk-nederlandske grænse og ender med en brat skrænt af Maasterras.
