The place, which currently has over 6,700 inhabitants, was first mentioned in writing in 1116 as Brath. It belonged to the Duchy of Guelders and from 1614 to Guelders and Berg. In 1815 it came to Prussia. Bracht is the birthplace of painter and graphic artist Hendrick Goltzius.
To the west of Bracht lies the expansive Brachter Wald, which stretches to the German-Dutch border and ends with a steep edge of the Maas terrace.
