Il luogo, che oggi conta oltre 6.700 abitanti, è stato menzionato per la prima volta in forma scritta nel 1116, come Brath. Apparteneva al Ducato di Gulik e, dal 1614, a Gulik e Berg. Nel 1815 passò alla Prussia. Bracht è il luogo di nascita del pittore e grafico Hendrick Goltzius.
A ovest di Bracht si trova l'esteso Brachter Wald, che si estende fino al confine tedesco-olandese e termina con un ripido bordo del terrazzo del Meno.
