Den 1948 byggede Douglas DC-6 fra KLM med navnet Koningin Juliana var på en ruteflyvning fra Johannesburg til Amsterdam med planlagte mellemlandinger i Brazzaville, Rom og Frankfurt am Main. Kl. 06:38 lettede flyet fra lufthavnen Rom-Ciampino til videreflyvning til Frankfurt.
