I 1871 begyndte man at bygge Niederwalddenkmal efter en tegning af Johannes Schilling og Karl Weisbach. I 1883 blev monumentet færdigt. Monumentet når en total højde på 38 meter, og på monumentet står en 10,5 meter høj statue af Germania, der symboliserer vogten ved Rhinen. Den minder om Reichsgründung, stiftelsen af det Tyske Rige i 1871 direkte efter den fransk-tyske krig. Monumentet har siden da været en turistattraktion.
