Altenhagen I ligger på nordskråningen af Nesselbjerget mellem grænsen til denne skov og naturbeskyttelsesområdet og dalbunden, der falder fra Deisterporten. Det tilhører som den vestligste bydel af byen Springe, hvis hovedby ligger ca. 5 km nordøstligt på den anden side af Deisterporten. Den sydlige og vestlige grænse for området Altenhagen I falder sammen med den ydre grænse for region Hannover til Landkreis Hameln-Pyrmont.
