På trods af at planerne for en katedral i den spanske hovedstad stammer fra det 16. århundrede, begyndte bygningen af kirken først i 1883. Katedralen blev indviet af pave Johannes Paul II den 15. juni 1993.
Katedralen skulle først være bygget i en gotisk stil, men for bedre at tilpasse bygningen til Det Kongelige Palads er det senere blevet besluttet at bruge den neoklassicistiske stil. Indretningen er moderne med endda popart påvirkninger.
