Levested
Det er et stort kvæg, der tidligere levede i store grupper på sletterne i Nord-Mexico, USA og Canada, fra det Store Sledehav til Mexico og fra det østlige Oregon til Appalacherne. Der er to underarter: slettebison (B. b. bison) og skovbison (B. b. athabascae) fra Canada.
Siden begyndelsen af århundredet er det blevet lovbeskyttet for at forhindre udryddelse, og det lever nu i reservater i de store nationale parker i USA.
