Senatpladsen og dens omgivelser udgør den ældste del af det centrale Helsinki. Landemærker og berømte bygninger omkring pladsen er Helsinki Domkirke, Statsgården, hovedbygningen af Københavns Universitet og Sederholm Huset, den ældste bygning i det centrale Helsinki, der daterer sig fra 1757.
