Den tidligere kloster ligger i den franske by Saint-Avit-Sénieur i regionen Nouvelle-Aquitaine, i departementet Dordogne, cirka 35 km øst for Bergerac, cirka 50 km vest for Sarlat-la-Canéda, i landskabet Périgord. Prioratet er blevet opført på et sted, hvor der i Merovingertiden levede en eremit ved navn Avitus Senior. Han var en soldat i tjeneste hos den vestgotiske konge Alarich II, før han trak sig tilbage som eremit.
