De voormalige abdij ligt in het gelijknamige Franse dorp Saint-Avit-Sénieur in de regio Nouvelle-Aquitaine, in het departement Dordogne, ongeveer 35 km ten oosten van Bergerac, circa 50 km ten westen van Sarlat-la-Canéda, in het landschap Périgord. Het priorij is op een plek gebouwd waar tijdens de Merovingen een kluizenaar genaamd Avitus Senior heeft geleefd. Hij was een soldaat in dienst van de Westgotische koning Alarich II, voordat hij zich als kluizenaar terugtrok.
