I en alder af 47 år døde Piaf af cancer i Plascassier ved den franske Riviera den 11. oktober 1963, samme dag som hendes ven Jean Cocteau døde. Hun blev begravet på Père Lachaise Kirkegård i Paris. Selvom hun blev nægtet en begravelsesmesse af den romersk-katolske ærkebiskop af Paris (på grund af hendes livsstil), trak hendes begravelsesfølge hundrede tusinder af sørgende ud på gaderne i Paris.
