Hôpital de la Salpêtrière i Paris var et af de vigtigste og mest kendte centre for psykiatri og neurologi i Europa.
Hôpital de la Salpêtrière blev bygget på ordre af kong Ludvig XIV. Det blev først brugt som salpeterfabrik. Efter nogle år blev bygningen taget i brug som opdragelses- og opholdssted for psykisk syge kvinder og prostituerede. Mænd blev behandlet i andre institutioner.
