Huningue ligger ved Rhinen i Trelandshjørnet: Schweiz, Tyskland og Frankrig. Navnet Huningue dukker første gang op i et dokument fra år 828. Da der var tale om et Rhinkryds, lod Ludvig XIV i 1679 bygge en fæstning af Vauban, som den nærliggende schweiziske by Basel altid betragtede som en trussel. Fæstningen spillede sin rolle som spærring i 136 år. Efter 1815 blev den på Schweiz' foranledning nedrevet.
