Huningue is located on the Rhine at the corner of the Three Borders: Swiss, German and French. The name Huningue first appears in a document dated 828. As a crossing point on the Rhine, Louis XIV commissioned Vauban to build a fortress there in 1679, which the neighboring Swiss city of Basel would always regard as a threat. The fortress remained a lock for 136 years. After 1815, it was dismantled at Switzerland's request.
