En lille landbrugs- og letindustriby beliggende cirka 15 km nordvest for Béthune og 40 km vest for Lille, ved krydset mellem D185, D182 og D69 vejene. Byen er omgået af N43 mod nord og A26 motorvejen mod syd.
Efter at have været ejet af greverne af Flandern, blev Lillers, som havde været befæstet mod normannerne, givet som en medgift i 1179 til kong Philip II August af Frankrig. I 1327 blev Artois skabt som et grevskab af Louis IX. Hans bror Robert blev den første greve. I 1303 blev byen Lillers plyndret af flænderne. I 1340 gjorde kong Edward III af England krav på tronen i Frankrig og startede de hundrede års krig, præget af to berømte slag, slaget ved Crécy i 1346 og slaget ved Agincourt i 1415, hvor Robert Wavrin, Lord of Lillers, mødte sin død. I 1542, under krigen mod Charles V, den hellige romerske kejser, brændte franske tropper Lillers. Befolkningen levede stadig i telte eller hytter tre år senere.
