Cognac ; Saintongese: Cougnat; Occitan: Conhac [kuˈɲak] ) er en kommune i Charente afdelingen i det sydvestlige Frankrig. Administrativt er kommunen Cognac en undersøgelse af Charente afdelingen. Byen Cognac var ukendt før det niende århundrede, da den blev befæstet. Under Hundredårskrigen skiftede byen konstant side, afhængig af krigens strømme. I 1526 gav den sit navn til Krigen om Cognac-alliancen, den militære alliance, der blev etableret af Kong Francis I af Frankrig for at kæmpe mod Habsburg-huset. Som en fordel ved Cognac-krigsalliancen gav Kong Francis I byen Cognac den kommercielle ret til at deltage i salgsmarkedet, der blev drevet langs floden, hvorfra regional Cognac udviklede sig til et center for produktion af vin og brandy.
