Den såkaldte Augsburg Interim sluttede, da protestantiske fyrster fra den schmalkaldiske liga henvendte sig til Henrik II af Frankrig og afsluttede Chambord-traktaten, der gav de frie byer Toul, Verdun og Metz til Kongeriget Frankrig. Den Hellige Romerske Kejser Karl V belejrede den franske garnison kommando af Francis, hertug af Guise. Selvom kanonader ødelagde store dele af forsvarværkerne, var den kejserlige hær ikke i stand til at tage byen. Ramt af tyfus, dysenteri og skørbug blev Karls hær tvunget til at opgive belejringen sammen med de syge og sårede. Metz forblev et fransk protektorat, indtil dets annektering blev formaliseret i 1648 med Westfalen-traktaten.
