This bridge was built in the Gothic period, in the 13th or early 14th century, between Saint-Savin and Saint-Germain, on the new route linking Poitiers to Bourges. Since that date, the road passes through Chauvigny and Saint-Savin, unlike the old Roman road, established further south and which passed through Saint-Pierre-Les-Eglises and the Gué de Sciaux in Antigny.
With a length of 100 meters and a width of 3.50 meters, it is designed as a slight humpback and is equipped with 5 pointed arches and a marine arch in the middle resting on rounded or beaked piers, on which refuges are built.
This bridge remained the main axis of the city until the construction of the new bridge in 1852.
Classified as a Historic Monument in 1896.
