I Gialova kan du finde et monument for de franske soldater under general Maison, som mistede deres liv efter det store slag ved Navarino i 1827 på grund af malaria. De lejede i det sumpede område af Gialova for at opbygge området efter kampene (byen Pylos og vejen til Methoni blev bygget af franskmændene). I løbet af september og oktober 1828 ramte malaria dem, og 4.760 blev syge, mens 915 døde ud af i alt 13.760 mænd. Der står stadig et monument ved siden af kapellet til minde om disse mænd.
