En Gialova puedes encontrar un monumento para los soldados franceses del General Maison que perdieron la vida tras la gran Batalla de Navarino en 1827 debido a la malaria. Acamparon en la zona pantanosa de Gialova para desarrollar la zona después de las batallas (la ciudad de Pylos y el camino hacia Methoni fueron construidos por los franceses). Durante septiembre y octubre de 1828, la malaria los atacó y 4,760 se enfermaron y 915 murieron de un total de 13,760 hombres. Aún hay un monumento junto a la capilla conmemorando a estos hombres.
