A Gialova puoi trovare un monumento per i soldati francesi del generale Maison che persero la vita dopo la grande battaglia di Navarino nel 1827 a causa della malaria. Accamparono nell'area paludosa di Gialova per sviluppare la zona dopo le battaglie (la città di Pylos e la strada per Methoni furono costruite dai francesi). Durante settembre e ottobre 1828, la malaria colpì e 4.760 si ammalarono e 915 morirono di un totale di 13.760 uomini. C'è ancora un monumento accanto alla cappella che commemora questi uomini.
