Fossiler af muslinger kan findes på klipperne af Pelion-bjerget, selv i høje højder, hvilket indikerer, at toppe af Pelion engang var i bunden af havet. For cirka 140 millioner år siden løftede en opadgående orogenetisk bevægelse af enorm kraft et smalt landstræk over havets bølger, som startede fra Makedonien og omfattede Olympus, Kissavos, Pelion og en del af Nord-Evia. Bjergene i Pelion stammer fra den tid.
