Stedet, hvor Erechtheion står, er et mytisk sted, hvor to tungvægtere fra den græske gudeverden kæmpede mod hinanden: Poseidon mod Athena. Poseidon stak sin trefork i klipperne på dette sted, hvor Erechtheion nu står. På det sted, hvor han ramte, strømmede havvand ud af ingenting og gav dermed byen en forbindelse til havet. Men Athena plantede på samme sted et oliventræ som gave til byen. Kongen af Athen, der skulle vælge side, vurderede, at oliventræet var mere nyttigt for byen end havet. Og derfor ligger byen ikke ved havet, men på de oliventræsrige bakker lidt længere inde i landet. Således blev Athena også byens gudinde. Der står stadig et oliventræ på dette sted, men det blev plantet i 1917.
