De Forenede Stater af de Ioniske Øer var et protektorat under Det Forenede Kongerige. I 1815 blev landet oprettet af Wienerkongressen fra en del af de Illyrisk Provincier. I 1864 blev øerne givet som gave til det nyoprettede Kongerige Grækenland.
Før de napoleonske krige var de Ioniske Øer en del af Republikken Venedig. Da den venetianske republik blev opløst i 1797 med Wiens traktat, kom øerne til Frankrig. Mellem 1798 og 1799 blev franskmændene drevet væk af en forenet russisk-tyrkisk alliance. Erobrerne etablerede Republikkens Syv Øer, som eksisterede fra 1800 til 1814.
