Diocezen ligger helt inden for Den Irske Republik og omfatter det meste af amterne Longford og Leitrim samt dele af amterne Cavan, Offaly, Roscommon, Sligo og Westmeath. De vigtigste byer i diocezen er Athlone, Ballymahon, Carrick-on-Shannon, Edgeworthstown, Granard og Longford.
Fusjonen af bispesæderne Ardagh og Clonmacnoise, som var blevet foreslået i 1709, blev gennemført efter Stephen MacEgans død, biskop af Meath den 30. maj 1756, som havde administreret bispesædet Clonmacnoise. Augustine Cheevers, biskop af Ardagh, blev oversat til bispesædet Meath den 7. august 1756, og Anthony Blake blev udnævnt som den første biskop af det forenede bispesæde Ardagh og Clonmacnoise den 11. august 1756.
