Athassel priory er den største middelalderpriori i Irland og strækker sig over et 4 acres stort område. Prioriet går tilbage til slutningen af det 12. århundrede, da det blev grundlagt af Augustinere under William de Burghs beskyttelse. Williams barnebarn Hubert de Burgh, senere biskop af Limerick, var prior i Athassel c. 1221. De oprindelige bygninger blev ændret og renoveret i løbet af de næste 300 år. Prioriet blev brændt to gange, en gang i 1329 af Brian, konge af Thomond, og igen i 1581 af John Fitzgerald af Desmond. En stor by var vokset op omkring prioriet, men blev ødelagt under de to angreb. Prioriet blev endelig opløst i 1537, og jorden blev givet til Thomas Butler, 10. jarl af Ormond, som forsømte klosteret, og det faldt derefter i ruiner.
