Den italienske by Mortara ligger i den norditalienske provins Pavia. Det makabre navn stammer fra det latinske Mortis Ara, som betyder Dødens Alter. Dette navn blev givet til stedet efter et blodigt slag mellem Karl den Store og langobarderne i året 773. Indtil 1860 var Mortara hovedstad i provinsen Lomellina. I dag er byen mere kendt for sin gæsproduktion. Det vigtigste monument i Mortaras historiske centrum er den 14. århundrede Basilica di S. Lorenzo.
