Gorizia ligger ved Isonzo, der strømmer fra de slovenske alper til Adriaterhavet. Det er et multikulturelt sted, en smeltedigel af italienske, slovenske og germanske indflydelser. Byen tilhørte under navnet Görz indtil 1918 Østrig-Ungarn. Af denne grund fremstår arkitekturen i Gorizia ofte østerrisk. Byen havde kælenavnet "det østerrigske Nice" på grund af de mange ligheder med den franske by Nice.
