Giaovanni Aldini eksperimenterede i 1802 her i Bologna med elektricitet og lig, som han havde hentet fra henrettelserne. Med en voltasøjle, et primitivt batteri, forsøgte han at få de dødes øjne til at blinke ved at bruge elektrisk strøm gennem ledninger anbragt i øret. Det resulterede i mærkelige grimasser på det døde ansigt.
Aldani var nevø til den kendte videnskabsmand Luigi Galvani, også fra Bologna, som allerede havde vist med frøben, at muskler trak sig sammen, hvis man bragte to metaller i kontakt.
