Giovanni Aldini experimentierte 1802 hier in Bologna mit Elektrizität und Leichnamen, die er von den Hinrichtungen erhalten hatte. Mit einer Voltazelle, einer primitiven Batterie, versuchte er, die Augen der Verstorbenen zum Blinzeln zu bringen, indem er elektrischen Strom über Drähte einführte, die im Ohr platziert waren. Das resultierte in bemerkenswerten Grimassen des toten Gesichts.
Aldini war der Neffe des bekannten Wissenschaftlers Luigi Galvani, ebenfalls aus Bologna, der bereits mit Froschschenkeln gezeigt hatte, dass sich Muskeln zusammenziehen, wenn man zwei Metalle in Kontakt bringt.
