Vaticanhøjen er en bakke, der ligger overfor Tiber-floden fra de traditionelle syv bakker i Rom, som også gav navn til Vatikanstaten. Det er stedet for Peterskirken.
De gamle romere havde flere holdninger til oprindelsen af det latinske ord Vaticanus. Varro forbandt det med en Deus Vaticanus eller Vagitanus, en romersk guddom, der menes at give spædbørn evnen til at tale, hvad der ses i deres første hyl. Varros ret komplicerede forklaring relaterer denne funktion til det beskyttende guddom af stedet og til de avancerede talekræfter, som en profet besad, som bevaret af den senere antiquar Aulus Gellius:
