Ankomsten af Teatre Politeama i 1865, som i dag er den prestigefyldte hjemsted for Fondazione Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana, gjorde dette sted til en så vigtig skillevej for byen Palermo, både hvad angår beliggenhed og rolle, at selv de to store pladser Piazza Ruggero Settimo og Piazza Castelnuovo almindeligvis kaldes Piazza Politeama.
