Buren er en by med en rig historie og mange seværdigheder. Byen Buren fik byretter i 1395. Buren's fæstningsværker er stadig for det meste intakte. Der er stadig volde, mure og en byport. Buren må kalde sig Oranjestad, på grund af båndet til den kongelige familie. Willem van Oranje giftede sig der i 1551 med Anna van Egmont, grevinde af Buren. Konge Willem-Alexander er derfor greve af Buren.
I Buren stod et af de største slotte i Nederlandene: Huis Buren. Slottet blev i 1804 solgt af regeringen til nedrivning. Med de solgte sten blev der restaureret huse, og helt nye huse blev bygget. Disse huse kaldes nu ofte 'slotshuse' i Buren.
