Den historiske fæstning Hellevoetsluis blev anlagt i begyndelsen af det 17. århundrede. Hellevoetsluis var den første marinebase for 's Lands Admiralitet. Sølvflåden fra Piet Heyn blev her landsat og derefter i triumf ført langs byerne i Holland til Amsterdam.
Fæstningen har i høj grad bevaret sin historiske tilstand, men rummer også interessant og velintegreret nybyggeri. Historisk set er det Tromphuys og jet (Michiel de) Ruyterhuys, Cruyttoren og Jan Blanken Dock (et unikt tørdok).
