La forteresse historique de Hellevoetsluis a été construite au début du 17ème siècle. Hellevoetsluis était la première base navale de l'Amirauté du pays. La Flotte de l'Argent de Piet Heyn a été débarquée ici et ensuite conduite en triomphe à travers les villes de Hollande jusqu'à Amsterdam.
La forteresse a en grande partie conservé son état historique, mais abrite également des constructions nouvelles intéressantes et bien intégrées. Historiquement, le Tromphuys et le (Michiel de) Ruyterhuys, la Cruyttoren et le Jan Blanken Dock (un cale sec unique).
