Det ligger sydøst for Hindeloopen, sydvest for It Heidenskip, nordvest for Oudega og nordøst for Hemelum. Bykernen ligger mellem Jan Broerskanalen, Koudumervaart og N359. I 2021 havde landsbyen 2.660 indbyggere. Under landsbyen hører også bebyggelserne Bovenburen, Galamadammen og Grote Wiske. Selvom det er kendt som et vandsportssted, har landsbyen selv kun en lille havn ved Koudumervaart, de store lystbådehavne findes i bebyggelsen Galamadammen.
