Det ligger nordøst for Dokkum og vest for Metslawier, mellem Wetsens og Oosternijkerk. Landsbyens centrum ligger ved Niawiersteropvaart og sydvest for N358. Det arbejder på mange fronter sammen med Metslawier og Oosternijkerk, og de kaldes også sammen for en trillinglandsby. Dog arbejder Niawier også meget sammen med Wetsens, og man kunne også tale om en tvillinglandsby. Der har de også en fælles landsbystøtteforening. I 2021 havde Niawier 370 indbyggere. Under landsbyen falder også delvist bebyggelsen Lutkewier.
