Mens missionæren Liudger opholdt sig i Vestsachsen, gav grev Wrachar te Brummen ham i år 794 et stykke land ved IJssel mellem Baak og Wichmond. I denne gave nævnes Wichmond for første gang dokumenteret som Withmundi. Befolkningen begyndte omkring år 800 at opføre en kirke, som i år 801 blev velsignet af Liudger til Salvator. Missionæren forlod snart stedet igen for at dedikere sig til sit nyetablerede kloster Werden.
