Oprindeligt løb Rijksvej 50 fra knudepunkt Hintham til knudepunkt Joure. Det var dermed en af de længste rijksveje i Holland. Den del af knudepunkt Emmeloord - knudepunkt Joure er nu en del af A6. På denne strækning er der stadig høje hectometerværdier at finde fra tiden med A50. Den del af knudepunkt Hintham - knudepunkt Paalgraven er nu en del af A59.
Oprindeligt var N50 fra 's-Hertogenbosch til Oss en del af Rijksvej 50. Da tracéet af Rijksvej 50 ved Oss blev omlagt i retning mod Eindhoven, blev vejstykket Knudepunkt Paalgraven - Knudepunkt Hintham omnummereret til N59. Senere blev dette til motorvejen A59.
