Her i Amsterdamse Vandrerydder blev den sidste vilde bjørn i Nederland fundet. En arkæolog fandt tilfældigt et fossil af en bjørnefod. Det er fra en vild brun bjørn og måske en af de sidste bjørne, der her i den tidlige middelalder gik rundt i Nederland. Det var den pensionerede arkæolog Wim Kuijper, der tilfældigt fandt knoglerne. Dengang var der på dette sted en tæt, fugtig og urørt urforest. C14-dateringen viser, at bjørnen her strejfede omkring mellem 880 og 970 efter Kristus i denne skov. I dag findes denne Ursus arctos eller europæisk brun bjørn kun i Alperne, Pyrenæerne og Balkan.
