Hier in den Amsterdamer Wasserleitungsdünen wurde der letzte wilde Bär der Niederlande gefunden. Ein Archäologe fand zufällig ein Fossil eines Bärenpfotes. Es ist das eines wilden Braunbären und vielleicht einer der letzten Bären, die hier im frühen Mittelalter in den Niederlanden umherstreiften. Es war der pensionierte Archäologe Wim Kuijper, der die Knochen zufällig fand. Zu dieser Zeit war an diesem Ort ein dichter, feuchter und unberührter Urwald. Die C14-Methode zeigt, dass der Bär hier zwischen 880 und 970 nach Christus in diesem Wald umherstreifte. Heutzutage kommt dieser Ursus arctos oder europäische Braunbär nur noch in den Alpen, den Pyrenäen und dem Balkan vor.
