I 1886 begyndte man byggeriet af den nye Sankt Bavo Kirke, som blev indviet i 1888.
Sankt Bavo blev designet af arkitekt Carl Weber og betragtes som et højdepunkt i hans værk. Det er en korskirke i neoromanogotisk stil. Kendetegnende er den høje kuppel, som virker lidt disproportional. Dette skyldes, at de to vesttårne, som oprindeligt var planlagt, aldrig blev færdiggjort på grund af mangel på penge.
