En 1886, la construction de la nouvelle église Saint-Bavon a commencé, qui a été consacrée en 1888.
La Saint-Bavo a été conçue par l'architecte Carl Weber et est considérée comme un point culminant de son œuvre. Il s'agit d'une basilique en croix de style néo-roman-gothique. Sa caractéristique est le haut dôme qui semble quelque peu disproportionné. Cela est dû au fait que les deux tours ouest, qui étaient initialement prévues, n'ont jamais été achevées en raison d'un manque d'argent.
