For nogle århundreder siden var dette hovedkanalen for Waal. Floden flyttede sig, og det gamle løb tilsandede, og til sidst var der ikke meget tilbage end et lille grav. I firserne blev leret, som var aflejret i det gamle flodeløb, gravet væk for at bage sten af det. Hvad der blev tilbage, var Lange Gat, en sø på stedet for det gamle flodeløb. Om sommeren er der langs breddene en smuk beplantning med blandt andet svaneæbletræer.
