Kapellet blev bygget som svar på vores Dame af Rosenkransen (senere navngivet som vores Dame af Fátima) til de tre små hyrder (Lucia, Francisco og Jacinta): "Jeg vil have, at I bygger en kapel her til min ære". Kapellet blev bygget på akkurat det sted, hvor synerne fandt sted i Fátima i 1917, som halvmindet af Lúcia. Fra 28. april til 15. juni 1919 blev opgaven med at bygge kapellet udført af en murer ved navn Joaquim Barbeiro fra landsbyen Santa Catarina da Serra. Den 13. oktober 1921 blev fejringen af messen officielt tilladt af den lokale biskop for første gang ved siden af kapellet.
