Hospice Our Lady of Mount Carmel af de discalled Carmelites blev grundlagt i 1755.
I 1763 gav Gaspar de Braganza, ærkebiskop af Braga, tilladelse til at bygge et kapel af samme navn . Den oprindelige bygning stod færdig i 1765 og blev kort efter udvidet til et kloster . Han forblev aktiv indtil 1834, hvor ordenerne blev afskaffet i Portugal.
Kort efter blev bygningen byens ejendom. Det rummede tinghuset, gymnasiet, gymnastiksalen, posthuset og for tiden kommunekontorerne.
Vor Frue af Carmel-bjerget har en smuk stenportal i Johannes-stil på sin vestfacade. Det var oprindeligt tænkt som hovedindgang til kirken, men dette blev aldrig realiseret på grund af pladsmangel udenfor. Den oprindeligt planlagte orientering af kirken blev ændret og flyttet mod syd, hvor der skulle bygges en større kirkegård.
