Det oprindelige World Trade Center i Lower Manhattan, New York City blev ødelagt under terroristangrebene den 11. september 2001, efter at det blev ramt af to kaprede kommercielle fly. One World Trade Center blev ramt kl. 8:46 østlig tid og kollapsede kl. 10:28. Two World Trade Center blev ramt kl. 9:03 og kollapsede kl. 9:59. Det resulterende vraggods beskadigede eller ødelagde mere end et dusin andre tilstødende og nærliggende bygninger, hvilket i sidste ende førte til kollaps af 7 World Trade Center kl. 17:21.
I alt 2.763 mennesker omkom i nedstyrtningerne, brande og efterfølgende kollaps, herunder 2.192 civile, 343 brandmænd og 71 politiansatte samt alle passagerer og besætningsmedlemmer på flyene, som omfattede 147 civile og de ti kaprere.
