Den 26. februar 1993 blev en lastvognsbombe detoneret under Nordtårnet i World Trade Center i New York City. Den 1.336 pund (606 kg) urea nitrat-hydrogengas-forstærkede enhed var beregnet til at kaste Nordtårnet (Tårn Et) ind i Sydtårnet (Tårn To), hvilket ville have medført, at begge tårne ville falde, hvilket ville dræbe titusinder af mennesker. Det lykkedes ikke, men det dræbte seks mennesker og sårede mere end tusinde. Angrebet blev planlagt af en gruppe terrorister, herunder Ramzi Yousef, Mahmud Abouhalima, Mohammad Salameh, Nidal A. Ayyad, Abdul Rahman Yasin og Ahmad Ajaj. De modtog finansiering fra Khaled Sheikh Mohammed, Yousefs onkel. I marts 1994 blev fire mænd dømt for at have udført bomben: Abouhalima, Ajaj, Ayyad og Salameh. Anklagerne omfattede sammensværgelse, eksplosiv ødelæggelse af ejendom og interstatslig transport af sprængstoffer. I november 1997 blev to mere dømt: Ramzi Yousef, hjernen bag bombningerne, og Eyad Ismoil, som kørte lastvognen med bomben.
